Adrenaline and Addiction: Formula 1’s Controversial Relationship with the Tobacco and Nicotine Industries in Historical Perspective
To mark 75 years of Formula 1 racing, Silverstone Museum hosted a research forum to bring together diverse perspectives on the sport’s cultural, social, and technological significance.
Dr Dan O’Neill delivered a talk titled ‘Adrenaline and Addiction: Formula 1’s Controversial Relationship with the Tobacco and Nicotine Industries in Historical Perspective’. The talk explored the off-the-track rivalry between the tobacco manufacturers John Player & Sons and Philip Morris as they sought to saturate the sport with their branding and sponsorship promotions. The talk also explored the public health impact of this activity and the ways the tobacco industry moulded regulation in its favour.
